Mary (Ann) (maiden name Panting) Pratley sentenced to seven days in prison was baptised on 26 May 1839 in Hailey and was the daughter of John and Mary (maiden name Hanks) Panting. John was born in 1808 in Hailey and married Mary (born in Bampton in 1805), on 4 November 1833 in Bampton. Mary Ann had five brothers, James born 1831, Thomas, John, Richard and another James born 1848, and two sisters, Emma and Sarah Ann.
Mary Ann married Frederick Pratley (the brother of fellow Martyr Elizabeth Pratley’s husband) on 10 October 1863 in Hailey. Frederick had been born in Ascott in 1842 and was an agricultural labourer. They had six boys, George, Frederick, John, Charles, Thomas and Arthur, and a daughter Mary Ann.
In 1874 Mary and Frederick with their first six children sailed on the Crusader to New Zealand. Mary gave birth to a daughter on the voyage who sadly died. Once in New Zealand she gave birth to her last son Arthur and another daughter Mary Ann, the first Mary Ann having died in a house fire.
Mary died of pneumonia in 1888 in Temuka, New Zealand
