Mary (earlier name Smith) Moss sentenced to ten days in prison was baptised 4 January 1857 in Ascott. She was the illegitimate daughter of Eliza Smith who was born in Ascott in 1834. In 1863 Eliza married Thomas Moss and Mary had two step siblings, George Thomas and Jane. The Census return of 1871 suggests that Mary was then working as a domestic servant at College House, the home of the Boyes.
Mary married George Pratley on 20 September 1875. George was a gardener who had been born in Leafield in 1855. The couple had nine children, six boys, George, Thomas, Charles, Henry, Walter, Alfred and Edward, and three girls, Mary Jane, Fanny and Maria.
Mary and her youngest son Edward died in Ascott and were buried together on 17 February 1890.
