On Wednesday November 11th we welcome a return of Stephen Barker, who will present an exploration of events and consequences at and after the end of the First World War.
We will meet as usual in Milton Village Hall, for the start of the talk at 7.30 pm, with refreshments beforehand.
Members free; guests and independent visitors £5.00
What did the end of the First World War mean for ordinary people? Stephen’s talk considers the impact of the Armistice on local communities, from the joy of celebration to the realities of rebuilding lives after four years of conflict.
Our poster highlights one major challenge of the period: the influenza epidemic of 1918, which affected communities already coping with the consequences of war.
Members and previous visitors will recall Stephen’s fascinating exploration of First World War trench humour, in his last visit to us in September 2025. [ Details here : opens in new tab]
